This position will be on a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Accountant plays a vital role in maintaining the City's financial integrity by overseeing complex accounting functions, financial analysis, and budgetary operations. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with governmental accounting standards, preparing financial reports, conducting audits, and providing insightful fiscal analysis to support decision-making. Serving as an experienced financial resource within the organization, the Senior Accountant leads cross-functional financial projects, guides accounting staff, and works closely with department heads to streamline financial operations. Their expertise ensures accurate financial reporting, strategic budget management, and effective administration of special fund accounts. This position also plays a key role in supporting the Moreno Valley Utility Division by ensuring proper tracking of revenues, expenditures, and debt obligations related to municipal utilities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a detail-driven finance professional with a strong background in governmental accounting, budget management, and financial reporting. They excel in problem-solving, project leadership, and cross-functional collaboration, effectively communicating complex financial concepts while ensuring accuracy and efficiency in fiscal operations. Additionally, they thrive in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities with precision and efficiency. Knowledge of utility financial management is highly desirable, as the role involves overseeing financial operations related to municipal utilities.

MINIMUM AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or a closely related field; OR, equivalent related work experience; AND

A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in a City or governmental agency.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.

Senior Accountant is the advanced professional journey-level classification of the finance/accounting job family that serves as an experienced resource to City managers and staff. This class performs professional accounting and financial work ranging from moderate difficulty to complex. Assignments require professional judgment and thorough knowledge of accounting principles and financial management practices. A Senior Accountant may be assigned lead responsibility for cross-functional projects and may guide the work of lower-level professional and technical accounting staff. Senior Accountant is distinguished from Accountant in that employees in the former class perform more complex accounting and analyses of greater significance and impact on the operations and management of the City.
