This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for an experienced permit technician to play a key role in the City’s land development process. As a Senior Permit Technician, you will lead daily permitting operations, oversee complex development applications, and serve as a technical expert and mentor to staff. You’ll collaborate with multiple departments, streamline permit processing, and help shape efficient, customer-focused service delivery. OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
Our i deal candidate is a highly experienced permitting professional with deep knowledge of land development, building codes, and plan review processes. They bring strong leadership skills and a proven ability to guide, train, and support staff while managing complex permit applications with accuracy and efficiency. This individual excels at interpreting technical plans, resolving challenging permitting issues, and coordinating across departments and agencies. With a customer-focused mindset, they communicate clearly with developers, contractors, and the public, exercising sound judgment, initiative, and diplomacy in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum And Desirable Qualifications
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; completion of some college-level coursework in planning, building construction, engineering or a related field OR, equivalent related work experience; and at least four years of experience as a Permit Technician, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses; Certifications; Special Requirements
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Senior Permit Technician is the lead level class in the permit technician class series. Incumbents are responsible for providing lead work direction, training and guidance to assigned staff. Incumbents perform the more complex permit duties, which require a broad knowledge of permitting, building and planning processes and procedures, as well as, problem solving and decision-making skills. Tasks performed require a high degree of initiative, independent judgment and discretion along with the ability to handle new and unusual circumstances as they arise.
Senior Permit Technician is distinguished from Development Services Coordinator in that an incumbent in the latter class is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the staffing and operation of the City's one-stop public counter for planning, building and safety, and land development engineering .

THE SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications at each level, based on a screening of required application materials, including the completed Supplemental Questionnaire, will be invited to continue in the selection process. Application Screening

Video Appraisal Interview
Applicants may complete a self-guided video interview by recording responses to a series of structured questions. These questions are designed to assess each candidate's qualifications and suitability for the position. There is no live interviewer or proctor; candidates will record their answers independently and submit the videos for evaluation.
Technical Interview
Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a structured technical interview designed to evaluate job-related knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in key competencies required for the position. Candidates will respond to a series of standardized questions, and their performance will be assessed using predetermined evaluation criteria to ensure a fair and consistent appraisal process.
Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
Eligible List: Once the appraisal is complete, HR will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
