Volunteering with our music program is a rewarding way to support youth in the community while gaining valuable experience in music education, mentorship, and teamwork. Volunteers may earn community service hours, build resumes, and develop meaningful connections in the field of music.

Our Music Program supports a variety of activities for youth, including orchestra rehearsals, performances, theory classes, and choir. The program is coordinated by the City of Pomona in collaboration with local music professionals and community partners to provide inclusive, engaging, and educational music experiences.

Volunteers interact directly with youth and contribute to their musical growth. Because of this, we seek individuals who are passionate, reliable, and willing to make a consistent commitment. Volunteers are expected to undergo an application and screening process prior to being placed.

Volunteering in the music program is more than donating your time, it’s about becoming a part of a creative and educational mission to inspire the next generation of musicians.

Hours for Volunteering

Academic Year ((weekday afternoons/evenings, with occasional weekend opportunities for performances, typically on Saturdays):
Assist with music instruction, rehearsals, or youth classes
Provide mentorship and guidance during scheduled activities
Summer:
Schedule varies depending on programming and events

Please note that this is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. While activities may occur during specific program hours, there is no minimum time commitment required. Participation is flexible, and volunteers are not obligated to fulfill a set number of hours.

Must successfully complete the application and screening process
Must be reliable and punctual
Must have a positive attitude and enjoy working with youth
Must be a team player
Must demonstrate basic skill or understanding of relevant musical area(s)
Prior music experience and/or a strong interest in music is desired
All duties are performed under the supervision of program staff.
Volunteers will not be expected to lead rehearsals or provide solo instruction.
General program support, including setup, check-in assistance, and material organization.

Music Volunteer Areas (varies depending on program availability):

Youth Orchestra Support – Assist instructors during rehearsals and performances for:
Brass: trumpet, trombone, French horn
Strings: violin, viola, cello, contrabass, electric bass
Percussion: timpani, marimbas, xylophone, snare/bass drum
Woodwinds: flute, clarinet, saxophone
Music Theory Support – Assist with beginner-level theory activities under staff. Preferred qualifications: ability to read music, understanding of music fundamentals, and some background in music education.
Vocal Support – Support youth choir rehearsals, vocal workshops, and performances. A singing voice, basic theory knowledge, and ability to read music is desirable.

Before volunteering, you will be required to

Be referred by music staff or complete a volunteer application
Submit a completed volunteer application
Meet with music staff for an overview and skills/ability assessment
If a mutual fit is determined, be referred to begin onboarding
Sign a Release and Waiver form
Pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) background check if working with minors
