UTILITIES POWER SCHEDULER/TRADER TRAINEE

The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is accepting applications for the position of UTILITIES POWER SCHEDULER/TRADER TRAINEE to fill one (1) vacancy in the Electric Division. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

This is the trainee class of the position. The Utilities Power Scheduler/Trader Trainee will learn to forecast and monitor short term system load requirements and meet these demands by economic utilization of power resources; to purchase and market electric energy within contractual guidelines; and to do related work as required.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Forecast, schedule, and monitor hourly to short-term electric load and resource needs.
  • Prepare, submit, and verify energy and transmission schedules using applicable scheduling and market systems.
  • Analyze market trends, load, fuel prices, and weather to optimize resources and identify trading opportunities.
  • Schedule internal generation, contracted resources, and interchange transactions for reliability and cost efficiency
  • Evaluate economic performance of trades and schedules; enhance tools, models, and procedures
  • Negotiate and execute short-term energy transactions within market and risk guidelines
  • Monitor real-time system conditions, outages, and congestion; make prompt scheduling adjustments as needed
  • Support energy accounting, settlement validation, and transaction reconciliation
  • Prepare operational reports, financial summaries, and resource analyses for internal and regulatory use
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory requirements, market design changes, and industry trends that may impact resource planning and operational strategies.

Education: A Bachelor's Degree in a related field.

Experience: None required.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Exposure in power system operation, power system forecasting, power scheduling techniques, energy accounting and operation and use of scheduling computer systems.
  • Exposure with California Independent System Operator (CAISO) energy markets, Market Redesign & Technology Upgrade (MRTU), Energy Imbalance Market (EIM), or similar Independent System Operator (ISO).
  • Exposure in bilateral trading and negotiation in the Western interconnection, including NERC tagging, resource optimization and purchase of transmission.
  • Familiarity with data analysis, forecasting concepts, and analytical tools
  • Master's Degree
