About The Position

The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies.

The County of Riverside Transportation Department has a vacancy for an Equipment Operator II at the Idyllwild/Anza location.

The selected candidate will be tasked with skillfully operating a variety of motorized construction and maintenance equipment in support of construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of County roadways. These duties require advanced training and the ability to perform complex forms of manipulation on a wide variety of heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, motor graders, large track-type dozers, oil mixers, hot mix paving equipment, low-bed tractors and trailers. This responsibility will require driving to various job sites within the assigned area and may require that the incumbent perform heavy manual labor in addition to operating the equipment.

The Department desires seasoned equipment operators with familiarity using the above-mentioned types of heavy equipment and machinery, knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in maintenance and construction work, and significant experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy gasoline and diesel-powered trucks. Candidates must possess the ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction tasks.

The Equipment Operator II is a journey level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents require the ability to operate tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment involving complex maneuvering and adjusting of levers and devices, the satisfactory operation of which requires a high degree of coordination and skill in manipulation. Incumbents often work independently of other employees, or are assigned lead responsibility over crews performing a variety of maintenance and construction work within specific guidelines.

The Transportation Department is responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges, and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.

Examples Of Essential Duties

  • Operate tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment (e.g., loaders, excavators, motor graders, scrapers, refuse compactors, oil mixers, and dozers) within required tolerance in the maintenance and construction of roads, landfills, flood control channels, and other public work facilities.
  • Prepare, grade, and shape new county roads, landfills, and flood control channels; check and set grades.
  • Work from survey reference marks, plans, and specifications; clear roads, channels and other facilities of storm debris and damage; construct and repair storm drains, culverts, catch basins, and concrete gutters.
  • Service and maintain assigned equipment; may operate low-bed or trucks with trailers in hauling equipment or materials.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools in performing work.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Two years in the maintenance or construction of public work facilities (e.g., roads, airports, landfills, or flood control channels) which included one year operating tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment as a primary duty.

License: Possession of a valid California Commercial Class A or B driver’s license, or an out-of-state equivalent, is required at the time of application, as the incumbent will be operating the equipment. Submit a current copy (received within the last 30 days) of your driving history record from the Department of Motor Vehicles in order to be considered for employment for this position. Physical Requirements: The Equipment Operator II works outdoors and is exposed to inclement weather. The Equipment Operator II will be required to perform lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds in weight, on occasion must be able to stand for long periods of time, and will also require that the incumbent walk on uneven ground or wet surfaces.

This position has been designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.

Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.

Knowledge of: The tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in public works construction and maintenance; the operation and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered construction and maintenance equipment.

Ability to: Perform a variety of skilled maintenance and construction tasks, including working to grade; safely operate tracked and/or wheeled motorized equipment; read plans and specifications relating to construction and field maintenance work; follow oral and written directions.
