About The Position

The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies .

Riverside County Regional Park and Open Space District is seeking a Park Maintenance Supervisor - Parks to support the Idyllwild Regional Park and surrounding park locations within the mountain region.

The Park Maintenance Supervisor plays a critical role in overseeing the maintenance, operations and management of Idyllwild Regional Park, McCall Memorial Park, and Hurkey Creek Regional Park. The selected candidate will actively participate in fieldwork alongside staff while managing and coordinating projects in close collaboration with the Parks Ranger Supervisor. The incumbent is responsible for developing, tracking, executing, and reporting on project work plans. Projects will include weed abatement; fencing and gate fabrication and installation; illegal dumping and homeless encampment cleanup; habitat restoration; small construction projects; road grading; and public engagement efforts. The position also oversees large recurring and new purchases.

Additional duties include coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies to protect conserved lands and properties. The Park Maintenance Supervisor – Parks collaborates with staff to prioritize projects in a manner that protects natural resources, ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations, participates in County Homeless Outreach efforts, and oversees encampment removals and cleanup activities.

Competitive candidates will have experience in park or open-space environments, demonstrated leadership skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and centralized maintenance management software (CMMS), ticketing systems, or related software. A strong maintenance background and experience operating heavy equipment are highly desirable.

The Park Maintenance Supervisor - Parks is a supervisory level classification and reports to the Park Maintenance Superintendent. Incumbents are assigned to a County park area which has intensive maintenance needs due to having numerous recreational and camping facilities, heavy public use, and extensive development.

Work Schedule: This position follows a 5/40 schedule, Sunday through Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday ad Saturday off. Availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime will be required to support special events and to meet departmental operational needs.

Examples Of Essential Duties

  • Plan, schedule, assign, supervise, evaluate and participate in the work of staff engaged in the maintenance of a park area; train subordinate personnel in departmental practices, policies, and procedures; perform, and direct staff in the performance of minor construction, maintenance, and repair of park structures, facilities, and grounds.
  • Assist in reviewing plans and specifications for park site projects, recommend modifications, and provide technical guidance to staff to ensure plan conformance.
  • Participate in hiring, promoting, disciplining, and terminating subordinate personnel.
  • Answer public inquiries, forwarding complaints or issues to supervisor; provide assistance in emergency situations.
  • Inspect park areas to evaluate existing conditions, determine areas needing maintenance or improvement work, and identify more efficient operational procedures, or correctional actions needed to minimize safety hazards.
  • Discuss work projects with supervisor and lead workers; provide information on anticipated equipment, supply and personnel needs for budget purposes.
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate records on materials, equipment, and personnel usage; request equipment and supplies; inform supervisor on progress of work.

Minimum Qualifications

OPTION I

Experience: Four years of performing skilled and semi-skilled building and ground maintenance work which includes two years in a park or closely related setting. (College level courses from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to two years of the non-specialized experience on the basis of 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of full-time experience.)

OPTION II

Experience: One year as a Lead Park Maintenance Worker with the County of Riverside.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license is required at the time of application, as the incumbent will be required to other work locations. The incumbent must obtain a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certificate and a Qualified Applicator License (QAL) within 12 months of hire.

Physical Exposures: The Park Maintenance Supervisor – Parks is routinely exposed to cold mountain conditions, including low temperatures, snow, ice, and wind. Duties require working on uneven terrain, using hand tools and machinery, handling chemicals, and lifting heavy materials. Proper use of cold-weather PPE and adherence to winter safety and cold-stress prevention practices are essential.

Environmental Exposures: The incumbent will be exposed to wild and domestic animals, as well as hazardous plants and wildlife such as rattlesnakes, bees, wild boars, mountain lions, dogs, poison oak, and stinging nettles. Occasional exposure to strong or unpleasant natural and environmental odors, such as decaying vegetation, wildlife, or refuse, will occur in outdoor wildlands and park settings

For positions designated by the DOT as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.

Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.

Knowledge of: Park policies and procedures; principles of supervision; the methods, tools, and materials used in park maintenance and construction work; groundskeeping and the care and propagation of plants, ground cover, shrubs, and trees; procedures and safety techniques used in performing maintenance and minor construction projects.

Ability to: Identify needed repairs or maintenance work; plan, supervise, and inspect the work of park staff; train and motivate staff members in all phases of park maintenance work, safety techniques, and courteous dealing with the public; prepare cost and material estimates, requisitions, and reports; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships
