Job Summary

The Masking Technician is responsible for preparing customer parts for metal finishing operations by applying and removing masking materials to protect designated surfaces from plating, anodizing, blasting, painting, or chemical processing. This position requires precision, attention to detail, and the ability to follow technical drawings, work instructions, and quality standards to ensure finished parts meet customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply masking materials such as tapes, plugs, caps, lacquers, and custom fixtures to protect non-plated surfaces
  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, technical drawings, and masking instructions
  • Prepare parts for processing by cleaning, degreasing, and staging components properly
  • Inspect masked parts to ensure correct coverage, adhesion, and compliance with specifications
  • Remove masking after processing without damaging plated or finished surfaces
  • Maintain masking tools, fixtures, and materials in good working condition
  • Identify and report masking errors, defects, or non-conforming conditions to supervisor or quality team
  • Follow all safety procedures when handling chemicals, solvents, and sharp tools
  • Maintain clean and organized work area (5S standards)
  • Support production flow and meet daily throughput targets

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in metal finishing, plating, aerospace manufacturing, or production environment preferred but not required (training provided)
  • Ability to read basic drawings and follow detailed written instructions
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
  • Ability to work with small, delicate, or precision components
  • Good hand-eye coordination and steady hands
  • Basic understanding of shop math and measurements (inch, mil, thickness)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Good vision (close detail and color recognition)
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally
  • Frequent use of hands for fine, repetitive work

Work Environment

  • Industrial metal finishing / plating shop
  • Exposure to chemicals, fumes, and shop noise (PPE required)

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience masking for electroplating, anodizing, or paint
  • Experience with aerospace or mil-spec parts
  • Familiarity with ASTM, AMS, or customer masking specifications
  • Experience using plugs, stop-off lacquer, or custom masking fixtures

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $16.90 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
